To be or not to be?

    @fongyun – Haha, so SO funny!

    @fongyun – Should we be logical or emotional? The press release of the Government was rubbish but spraying fire extinguisher foam to Olympic Torch is not only noise. If we are not impartial and impersonal enough, we make no difference from the Government officers who cannot count and think themselves humourous in the press release.

    @fongyun – 1. I am sorry if I have commented on something I am not sure. I didn’t mean to.2. I appreciate not only you but 3 teachers very much since the very beginning. I appreciate that you have vision of your careers, mission in your life and guts in your voices. Don’t mention paying a visit to you. If there is opportunity that any one of you, Sandra and I can have tea together, I will be like a fan seeing idols.3. I only do not like to see any one of you to be too emotional without any logic. Those utterances like “Will someone die?" are contributing nothing to the discussion.4. The torch and the unjust accusation are two different things. Only if we have this logic, our advocacy will be persuasive. Of course, it is still your choice.

    @wkalfredchan – It is a very fine metaphor by extingishing the torch, if you have a second thought……  The ‘linkage’ is so delicate.  Given that the torch means the ‘Olympic spirits’ (whatever they are), now people find (or think) that the Olympics spirits have died (the unjust legal system, the imhuman treatments, the harming of alterntive cultures and lack of human rights, etc., etc.), nd they tried to reflect it in their protest, does it feel so ‘Barbarian’? :-O  The meaning and the means of expressing it (and attracting media attention) is just so unbeatable!!!  Why do you think that it is too violent?!?!?!

  12. wkalfredchan says :

    @Frostig – 1. It depends on how you define violence. There seems to be a huge gap between yours and mine. It is so huge that I don’t think it is appropriate to occupy someone’s space to narrow the gap as I think there will be a long discussion. (I use the term “discussion" instead of “dialogue" since I really it requires a period of time. No offence.)
    2. Olympic Spirits have not died. The Spirits are always there. What people disagree is not the spirits. This is why I don’t agree that the “fine metaphor" works.
    3. It is exactly because we are not barbarians that we will not do whatever we think it is right at all means. Otherwise you only want to win over the others. It is not a win-lose game. Our civilisation is evolved from mutual construction. If we possess the thinking “You are wrong! You go to hell!", there will be no development at all. You can refer to Peter Senge’s “The Fifth Discipline" for details.

  13. Frostig says :

    @wkalfredchan – They think that ‘Olympic spirits’ are dead IN CHINA, or it will be killed by China, and thus have such attempts (under my own simple, naive interpretation).  I find such ‘say’, or ‘slogan’ quite appropriate, at least under such assumption/understanding.
    AND, I don’t think that ‘development’ is the ultimate goal for the whole world.  It is not always good to ‘develop’.  Things can stay the way they are, just given that they are good enough……

  14. Frostig says :

    For some people, even eating meat (or fish) is very violent so they choose to become vegetarians, or even vegans……  I would just say, that is not my standard, but I accept the fact that different people have very different standards.

  15. wkalfredchan says :

    @Frostig – You have completely interpreted all the issues only according to your own perspective. By dialogue we mean people can open their mind to new ideas, open their hearts to themselves into others’ shoes and last but not least open their wills so their original wills may not be final and not negotiable. This is also what C. Argyris and D. Schon said about combing inquiry with advocacy. This is not only courtesy but also respect and evolution. Therefore, by development not only means the physical and economical development. It is the well-being and the spirituality. You may consider your way of doing things as top-down; mine is bottom-up because I care more about the life of the people not only the ideologies.

  16. Frostig says :

    @wkalfredchan – Sorry, but it was just a misunderstanding.
    Why I chose to respond to you, was JUST because I believed in the power of discussions and conversations.  (Some how like what you just claimed.)  If you didn’t feel the same, then fine.
    My way wasn’t ‘top-down’, if you believe yours to be ‘bottom-up’……
    Just want to reflect on one HUGE SHOCK…  I was SO SHOCKED and some how inspired when a lecturer questioned us, ‘Why there has to be “development" / “improvements" in this world?’  It was so so much as a reminder……  It totally made me feel shocked……  It asked me to reflect on what we took for granted.  It is a VERY HARSH way of thinking, as you will need to challenge yourself all the time and feel the pain, but it is how you can jump out of your own fixed perspectives.  That’s how I am thinking……  I remember a lecturer even ‘challenged’ us ‘why we loved/prefered the easier things’ / ‘why we wanted to feel comfortable / happy’.  It has, again, brought me into deep thoughts, and still, except ‘habits’, I haven’t come up with any other answers yet.  (If you have any other ideas, please share with me.)  That’s my way of thinking now, neither ‘bottom-up’ nor ‘top-down’, but rather webbed and scattered, also horizontal, if you try to figure out a ‘picture’ in mind……
    WHY I brought up the question to ask everyone to reflect on ‘why development is essential’?  You can see from the words above that it was such a great shock and reminder for me, and I hope to share it with everybody, to bring people to reflect the similar things, just nearly IDENTICAL to what you JUST SAID.  If this style or approach made you misunderstand, I apologise.  Just, I am NOT just thinking about things in my perspective, if there were still just ONE SINGLE PERSPECTIVE in my mind.  I am open to the ideas and suggestions of the others.  That’s what I have to say.
    Just, have YOU opened your mind and to think of WHY?
